Number of farmers markets, community gardeners on the rise in the U.S
Glad to hear it! The UK is taking notice!
As the global population pursues healthier methods of living and surviving, many are turning to community farming as a solution. Currently there are around 456,000 “beginning farmers” in the United States, defined as those with less than a decades experience in farming. These numbers are on the rise, and many beginning farmers believe community farming to be a solution for those looking to escape genetically modified foods and the heavy use of pesticides. These novice farmers are more likely to be college educated and have jobs away from the farm than receive government subsidies as established farmers.
The move towards community farming has also created a 38 percent increase in farmers’ markets around the United States over the past five years.
